NADA Opening Day Performance
Thursday December 3rd 3:00 PM
Derrick Adams
‘Introduction to Bizarro Wiz’
Le Jardin Theater, Deauville Beach Resort

Collette Blanchard Gallery is pleased to announce their participation in the 2009 NADA Art Fair featuring artist Derrick Adams. Mr. Adams will also present a performance piece at the Le Jardin Theater at the Deauville Beach Resort. The performance, like the works in Adams’ booth, is inspired by the fantastical, seriocomic, and mystical “Land of Oz” as depicted in 1978′s “The Wiz”. The performance will include a short video, produced in collaboration with artist Ramon Silva, which portrays the artist in the role of the terrorizing and omniscient Wiz. The second part of the work will be a live performance of lights, sound, and movement with performers reinterpreting the “Emerald City” dance from “The Wiz” in a black, gray and white color scheme.

For his presentation at the Collette Blanchard Gallery booth there wlill be new paintings on paper and two performances. Sitting in a cubicle-like structure filled with The Wiz’s mementos and enclosed by a curtain, the Wiz will read passages from literature, engage in fragmented/one-sided dialogue, and play a sound-board of spellbinding sounds. Through his performances, Adams will portray the powerful, yet sad, role of the oracle that is The Wiz; a character who is omniscient and prophetic but whose wisdom oftentimes is not heeded, heard, or understood.

MPHO is a British talent like no other. A genre-defying singer, songwriter and producer, she has enormous global crossover pop potential. Already a name to drop amongst people in the know, MPHO is set to be one of the most exciting names of 2009.

Her debut single on Parlophone/Wall of Sound, ‘Box N Locks’ is produced by acclaimed maestro, Switch. The track samples the legendary guitar hook from the Martha and the Muffins new wave hit, ‘Echo Beach’.

MPHO was born in apartheid South Africa and raised in a racially mixed family of musicians and political activists in Brixton. Her life story is as colourful as her music, but the overriding theme of both has been MPHO’s determination to find her own space, to define herself on her own terms.

So right from the release of her first single she’s wasting no time in blowing apart some of the stereotypes she’s found most restrictive. On ‘Box N Locks’ MPHO kicks against the boxes people put her in, and the locks they tried to use to keep the lid on her talent.

The project is of a soulful disposition, has futurefunk aspirations, and owes its foundation to African diasporic rythmns.

” Its sound is unraveling as a synergy between what we’ve both been doing musically in our solo careers: Soul, Hip-Hop, Electronica, etc. Recording has been sporadic so far. We plan on finishing the many pieces we’ve laid down and present an EP later this year.”

Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew
Sierra Leone, West Africa!!!!!

After packing the national stadium for performances in their home country of Sierra Leone and contributing music to the Academy Award–nominated film Blood Diamond, African superstars Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew are poised to conquer the global airwaves with their international debut album (due out in fall 2009) and their unique sound, which blends the swagger and funk of hip-hop, the passion and energy of dancehall, and the socially conscious vibe of reggae. The group has generated so much buzz in the hip-hop world that major stars including ?uestlove and Black Thought of the Roots, Talib Kweli, K’Naan, Res, and El-P have contributed their vocal and/or production talents to the upcoming release, helmed by the production team Fyre Department (whose credits include 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, GZA, Talib Kweli, Justin Timberlake). With this great collection of creatives, Bajah’s own star is rising as the Sean Paul of West Africa with the social conscience of Bob Marley and Fela Kuti.

So much more than just another hip-hop outfit, Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew have been likened to another band renowned internationally for speaking out against political and social injustices: U2. In Sierra Leone, now emerging from the throes of a brutal 10-year civil war, Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew are hailed as “the voice of the voiceless,” speaking truths on behalf of those people who have no political power, spreading messages of peace and reconciliation, outing corrupt politicians, and inspiring the disenfranchised youth to pursue their dreams. “We always speak about real stuff, like the suffering, what is going on,” says the group’s frontman, Bajah. “So most of the youth, the fans, are going crazy over it, because they think it’s the reality—that’s how it is. So they show mad love at times.”

Love is another theme of their music, and the joy and love their legions of fans have shown them comes through in their energetic, powerful live performances. The Crew—which consists of Bajah, A-Klazz, and Dovy Dovy in the U.S. and the Jungle Leaders (Funky Fred, Dell, and Sly) back in Sierra Leone—started writing, recording, and performing together in 2000, and quickly rose to the heights of fame in their home country, where everyone from young schoolchildren to village elders have come out to support Dry Eye’s music and message—often going to extremes to show these national heroes love and respect. “When we have a show in the national stadium, you see these guys making a long line, taking off their T-shirts and putting them on the floor so we can walk on it as a mat to go on the stage,” says A-Klazz. “Yeah. Red carpet,” Bajah adds with amazement. “A lot of love, man. For real.”

In Sierra Leone, the term dry eye is an expression of boldness. “The kids that always try to ask questions and want to know things are the dry eye. If you always coming up to talk to the elder people, trying to ask them certain questions, they say, ‘Oh, you, you’re dry eye,’ like, ‘You’re bold. You’re too bold!’” Bajah explains. “But we just use dry eye because we decide to talk about the bad things going on. Cause the leaders, we take them as our fathers—but we still gonna say some things, the reality. We just gonna stand, no matter what. No more tears in the eye. We’re just gonna stay dry eye and say something. You understand? That’s strong.

”We talk about different things,” Bajah continues. “We talk about love. We talk about life, social problems. Music is about life.” And now, Bajah + the Dry Eye Crew are sharing their unique perspective on life and spreading their message of hope, love, and inspiration across the globe through their vibrant, infectious music and their electrifying live shows. And the world is listening…

Ramon’s work captures the essence of young chic urban lifestyle. Within this essence lies the life and breath of the greatest city in the world. It circulates and embeds itself in every inhabitant and willing participant. A place of great extremities where the masses maneuver through bitter cold winters, yet still eyes firmly planted on spring and summer. A world where vast amounts of money is spent on clothing, dining as well as our entertainment. A place mesmerized by the exuberance of nightlife and the sensation that is evoked from such forays into the night. We find ourselves constantly chasing that magical sensation felt just a week before only to stumble out of bed with vague memories and brief enchanting encounters. We abandon all sane thoughts and throw caution to the wind. This is the entry point into my work which has inevitably become not only site specific to New York but also very specific to the views and life of a single male living in the city that never sleeps.

Ramon Silva in his D.U.M.B.O studio Brooklyn NY, 2009

“I am reminded on a daily basis

that New York city has some of the most beautiful and extraordinary women in the world. As subject matter they have provided a great deal of artistic inspiration over the years. This is my first and so far only commisioned portrait. I was given complete creative control on this project. I wanted to capture her radiant beauty with bright colors and complemented her with one of my signature patterns in the background.”

Bruklin acrylic on wood panel 38 x 26 2005

Ocean Drive Acrylic on Canvas 36 x 48 2007

“I love South Beach. The weather, beaches, boutique hotels, nightlife and

dining on Ocean Drive. I am drawn to the great palate of exotic colors which at times can be very gaudy but inspiring nonetheless. This painting is an ode to one of New Yorkers favorite weekend getaway destinations.

Snake Charmer

“The use of Pattern has been very predominant in most of my works. My latest work is no exception. The new series is focused more on abstraction than previous works. Ive stepped away from the traditional format of painting on canvas and instead using what I feel to be an more organic approach. I am now collaging onto large rolls of paper with xerox copies and splicing them into a grid like format. I then apply heavy amounts of medium and iridescent washes of paint. By doing so, the once grid like appearance disappears ever so subtly and acts as a ground. I then begin the process of top painting with strokes of bold color all while maintaining a sense of patterning. I am very excited about this new direction and I look forward to the continued development of this aesthetic.

Elliott Wilson (rapradar.com) and Jonathan Mannion run into each other at Jonathans photo exhibit at Milk Studios. Elliott discusses Eminem, jay-z photos with Mr.Mannion.

Posted by Nahright.com much respect.

For those of you who don’t know who Jonathan Mannion, in 1996 Mannion was commissioned, in his first major record company contract, to take photos of Brooklyn rapper Jay-Z for the Reasonable Doubt album. Mannion has gone on from that to photograph thirteen years of hip hop performers: Aaliyah, Eminem, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Lil’ Wayne, etc.

Hip-hop journalist, Elliot “YN” Wilson literally created “the book” on how to document hip-hop culture. Wilson has done it all, from books (Ego Trip’s Big Book of Racism and Book of Rap Lists) to TV shows (Ego Trip’s ‘The (White) Rapper Show and ‘Miss Rap Supreme’) to heading up XXL, hip-hop’s undisputed bible.

Big ups to Jonathan Mannion x Elliott “YN” Wilson x GakCity x LiberationLab x Nahright.
